AFL Finals, how does this work?
Week One
At the end of the season, the teams are ranked from 1 to 8 in the order that they finished the home-and-away season, as shown on the left. Using the ladder positions, 1st plays 4th, 2nd plays 3rd, 6th plays 7th and 5th plays 8th in the qualifying finals. The higher ranked team receives home ground advantage. Of the four teams that lose the preliminary finals, the two teams with the lowest rank from the home-and-away season are eliminated from the finals series. Of the four teams that win the qualifying finals, the two teams with the highest rank from the home-and-away season progress to the preliminary finals in week three of the finals series. The remaining two winners progress to the semi-finals in week two.
Week Two
The two lowest-ranked winners from week one host sudden-death semi-finals against the two highest-ranked losers from week one. The winners progress to the preliminary final in week three. The losers are eliminated from the finals series.
Week Three
The two highest-ranked winners from week one will host preliminary finals against the two winners from week two.
AFL GRAND FINAL
The two winners from week three will contest the grand final at the MCG.
